Longcase clock by Robert Sutton (1774–1835)
This is an extremely rare longcase clock with a wooden movement by Lincolnshire clockmaker Robert Sutton. The two Sutton clocks in the collection at the Usher Gallery are the only known extant examples of his work. He worked in Barton-on-Humber, very close to where John Harrison of longitude fame worked, and Sutton restored one of Harrison’s clocks, perhaps inspiring him to make clocks in a similar manner.
The clock has a movement of English oak, with a mahogany case and an ebonised mahogany dial. Although influenced by Harrison, Sutton remains an outstanding craftsman and innovator in his own right.
