Lemon and White Water Spaniel by George Stubbs A.R.A. (1724–1806)

This painting of a lemon and white water spaniel was commissioned by Charles Anderson-Pelham, 1st Baron Yarborough of Brocklesby Park in Lincolnshire. The artist, George Stubbs, worked for Pelham in 1776 and 1792 and so this painting may have been commissioned whilst he was in London. The spaniel is very much like a Clumber spaniel but not a pure–breed. This spaniel was not the only dog that Stubbs painted for Pelham; he painted his celebrated hound Ringwood in 1792.

Stubbs is renowned for being one of the greatest English horse painters, but he also painted other animals such as dogs, deer, lions and a kangaroo.

The painting is currently on loan to the Wallace Collection, London for their exhibition Portraits of Dogs: From Gainsborough to Hockney, showing between 29 March - 15 October 2023.
