Heads by Thomas J Price
Three bronze 'heads' by contemporary British sculptor Thomas J Price were acquired for our permanent collections in 2021 with assistance from The Art Fund (with a contribution from the Wolfson Foundation), the Contemporary Art Society and the Heslam Trust.
The works depict imagined Black people based on an amalgamation of people's behaviours and 'types' represented in the media, and they reference classical and neoclassical sculpture, subverting traditional sculptural hierarchies. They are a significant acquisition for our art collection, following the Black Lives Matter protests of 2021, and the UK museum sector response to this, and it seeks to address the historic lack of representation in the collection.
