Collection of paintings by Peter DeWint (1784–1849)
A collection of about 266 works by Peter DeWint, of which there are always some on display. He is primarily known as a watercolourist, with which he had great success, but also painted in oil. He painted directly from nature, delighting in landscapes, capturing the effects of weather and light.
DeWint, born in Staffordshire, made an attachment to Lincolnshire when he visited his friend and fellow artist William Hilton, subsequently marrying Hilton's sister Harriet. There are several Lincolnshire landscapes in the collection, including Lincolnshire Landscape from Horncastle and Lincoln from the South with Bargate, showing his keen observation of the landscape around him, and his use of big skies and colour.
Currently works may be seen in Gallery 2 (ground floor) and Gallery 6 (first floor). As with all our collections not on display, an appointment may be made to view them.
