‘Tools of the Trade: Investigation and conservation of the smith’s hoard from Tattershall Thorpe’

Join Michelle Johns for an archaeological Lunchtime Lecture

In February 1981, a large group of artefacts, many corroded together, were discovered in an isolated grave at Tattershall Thorpe in Lincolnshire. It was not until post-excavation work began that it was realised that the find was Anglo-Saxon in date and a significant find; the group comprising the working tools and equipment of a smith. Work to preserve and study this unique group has spanned the following 35 years.

This lecture will discuss the techniques used to investigate the artefacts as well as look at the ongoing challenges involved in their preservation. It will also look at the discoveries made during the forensic investigation that have aided the understanding and interpretation of the hoard.

Michelle Johns is the Collections Access Officer (preservation) for the Lincolnshire Heritage Service, which includes The Collection.
