The Shapes We Need by Billy
New artist flags to fly above the Usher Gallery to mark the centenary of the Representation of the People Act.
To mark this historic anniversary and to celebrate the steady journey to equality for all, The Collection has commissioned internationally-exhibiting artist, Billy, to design six flags to fly above the Usher Gallery and four further flags to be seen along the high street in Lincoln, kindly supported by Lincoln BIG.
Billy graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 2007 with a degree in Graphic Design and now concentrates on making community-led projects all over the world. For this project, Billy has developed a visual language, inspired by her research into the city of Lincoln, vexillology (the study of flags) and the representation of people in the ongoing journey to equality.
Speaking about the project, Billy has said: 'Creating artwork in public spaces drives my vision of what a better society could look like, I believe in the importance of using art in public spaces and the positive effect this will have if you contextualise the artwork to its environment. The notion that freedom and happiness can be achieved through creative action is something I continue to reflect on.'
The flags will be flying above the Usher Gallery from the 27th November and will go up on the high street during that week. There will be more information and a map available at The Collection and Usher Gallery, or alternatively download the information and the map from The Collection website.
