Make a Mosaic Workshop
Join the learning team for a fun mosaic making workshop which includes a look at the mosaics on display at Lincoln Museum, a chance to handle real Roman tesserae and make your own tiled design to take home.
Join us for a brief tour of the archaeology gallery to look at our two Roman mosaics discovered in Lincoln, including one found below the museum itself! You'll also get a chance to handle real sections of mosaic that are 2000 years old. We will then guide you through the simple process of designing and making your own coaster sized mosaic using tiles and grout. Create your own unique design or use one of our templates.
This activity is suitable for all ages and abilities, although younger partcipants may need some help from an adult. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Please note that this activity can create dust and debris from the tiles.
Thursday 22nd August
£6.50 per participant (accompanying adults are free)
please book in advance as spaces are limited
What to expect:
This workshop is taking place in the archaeology gallery and education suite at Lincoln Museum. You need to book your tickets in advance online or at Lincoln Museum reception desk. Gather in the orientation hall (the open area with the glass roof) at Lincoln Museum 5 minutes before the start time, where a member of the learning team will greet you and check your name on the bookings list.
All participants will first spend time in the archaeology gallery which is fully accessible. The staff member will give a short tour (5-10 minutes) and then there will be a chance to look at and handle a selection of Roman artefacts on a table. Then the participants will be led to the education suite which is on a mezzanine level accessible by open plan stairs or a lift. If you do not want to take part in the tour and artefact handling you can rejoin the group as they head to the education suite, or make your own way up.
This session will run from 10:30 until 12:00 noon. You are welcome to take breaks as you require them and you do not have to stay until the end time. If you would like to spend longer making your mosaic this is ok too (the staff may be cleaning and tidying the room whilst you continue).
In the mosaic making workshop you will be using scissors, runny pva glue, coloured plaster tiles and a grout and sand mixture. The grouting can be messy and is best done with your hands. We can provide gloves if you wish. There are sinks available to wash your hands.
This session is beginner level and is appropriate for all ages, with support from an adult.
You may find this workshop tricky if you have difficulties with Fine Motor skills (for example, using scissors), although you can create simple designs without needing to cut the tiles. As this workshop is family friendly, the space may be noisy, if you have difficulty with loud noises, we have noise cancelling head phones and fidget toys available. We can also set up a workspace away from the group in the adjacent room if you would like.
Here at Lincoln Museum and Usher Gallery, we welcome all participants; if you still aren’t sure whether this workshop is accessible for you or someone you care for, please email us at investigate-learning@lincolnshire.gov.uk and we can discuss your access requirements.
