Lincolnshire’s Great Exhibition Lecture Series

A series of lectures on themes relating to the Great Exhibition

The Historic Lincoln Trust and The Collection are delighted to welcome specialists who will give a series of lectures on themes linked to the stunning Great Exhibition taking place across Lincoln city this summer. Enjoy an evening talk and a chance to see the museum and exhibition after hours.

 

13 August

Magna Carta: Did she die in vain? - guest lecturer Dr Jessica Nelson

This talk will look at the differences between the 1215 and 1225 versions of Magna Carta, both currently on display as part of the Great Exhibition, and then explore how Magna Carta was used by people across social scale to defend their rights and liberties. Dr Nelson is Princial Medieval Records Specialist at The National Archives where she has worked for 8 years. 

Magna Carta & Parliament - guest lecturer David Prior

This illustrated lecture will examine the relationship between Magna Carta and Parliament from 1215 to the present day. David Prior is Head of Public Services and Outreach at the Parliamentary Archives. He has worked in the heritage and archives sector for over 25 years and has curated several major exhibitions and displays relating to Parliamentary anniversaries.

The Luttrell Psalter in Context - guest lecturer Dr Kathleen Doyle

The lecture will discuss the Psalter in the context of other English illuminated psalters of the period, and will focus on the illustration with lots of images from the manuscript. Dr Doyle is the Lead Curator, Illuminated Manuscripts at the British Library. She collaborated on the AHRC funded Royal Manuscripts project with Dr Scot McKendrick.

Tennyson, Poet of Lincolnshire - guest lecturer Professor Leonee Ormond

Alfred Tennyson was born in Somersby and lived there during the formative years of his early life. The lecture will explore the very considerable effect of the Wolds and of the Lincolnshire coast upon his poetry. Professor Ormond is Professor Emerita of Victorian Studies at King's College London. She is a specialist in 19th Century literature, Alfred Lord Tennyson, J.M. Barrie and George Bernard Shaw.

 

Lectures start at 7pm in The Collection Auditorium and will be followed by an opportunity to view the exhibition until 9pm

Exclusive evening tours in the Medieval and Wren Libraries at Lincoln Cathedral:
There will be two ‘exclusive’ evening opportunities to visit the Medieval and Wren Libraries at Lincoln Cathedral - one of the four venues hosting the exhibition this summer.
Each event will offer 25 visitors special evening access to the exhibits in the libraries, in the company of a knowledgeable guide, followed by a glass of wine or fruit juice in the Cathedral cloisters. All guests will also receive a goody-bag, which amongst other items, will include a Pilgrim Badge, specially commissioned by the Historic Lincoln Trust for 2015.
The evening events will take place on Wednesday 19 August, and Tuesday 15 September, from 6.30 – 8.00pm.Ticket price £15 per person for each event. Please note that the Cathedral’s libraries can only be accessed by a flight of stairs, and there are no alternative access arrangements at this time. The events are hosted by Lincoln Cathedral in association with the Historic Lincoln Trust.
