To celebrate this year's Heritage Open Days theme of Picturing the Past there will be a short talk and small display about the windmill paintings by Karl Salsbury Wood.  Many of the windmills he painted no longer exist, so this archive has become a valuable resource documenting the many windmills not only in Lincolnshire but across the country that were so important to an earlier way of life.

Karl Wood has long associations with Lincolnshire, as he moved to Gainsborough not long after the First World War and lived there for over 30 years.  He was art master at Gainsborough Grammar School and also taught painting to private pupils, who often accompanied him on his sketching expeditions in the Lincolnshire countryside.

It is not known how Karl Wood's interest in windmills was first sparked but it became almost an obsession.  This short talk will explore this obsession and there will be an opportunity to view additional paintings and sketches.

From 6th September 2018 a small display (two display cases) of Karl Wood's windmill paintings will be on show in the Usher Gallery.
