‘Finding the Roman Army: Metal-detecting and the military in Roman Lincolnshire’

The Roman province of Britannia was one of the most heavily militarised parts of the Roman Empire. Forts, inscriptions, and documentary evidence give us important insights into times of political unrest, peace, and the movement of soldiers. But, what about small-finds? In the last 10 years over 20,000 Roman objects have been reported by metal-detectorists searching Lincolnshire fields. Do they tell us anything about the Roman army? Can we spot evidence of soldiers through the things now being found in the plough soil?
