The day brings together artists, curators and historians to provide a context for Grant’s and Götz’s Lincoln murals, looking at both their heritage and significance today and exploring more widely the commissioning and role of contemporary art in public spaces, whether sacred or secular. Includes lunch and entrance to the Cathedral. This conference is a partnership between The Schools of History and Heritage and Fine and Performing Arts, University of Lincoln and The Collection, Lincoln and has received funding from the Paul Mellon Foundation and support from the University of Sunderland and Lincoln Cathedral.

Ann Sumner
Ann Sumner is an art historian, exhibition curator and museum director and is currently heading up the Public Art Project at the University of Leeds. She was the executive director of the Brontë Society, a former director of the Barber Institute of Fine Arts at Birmingham University, England (2007–2012), and the first director of the Birmingham Museums Trust, comprising the merged Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and Thinktank, from 2012 until 2013.
Ashley Gallant
Ashley is project curator of The Russell Chantry: Lothar Götz / Duncan Grant and leads on the contemporary art programme at the Collection and Usher Gallery.
Jim Cheshire
Jim’s research examines the literary and visual culture of the nineteenth century and thematically is centred on Victorian medievalism. He has recently been working on the relationship between the literary and material culture surrounding the career of Alfred Tennyson. Several related publications discuss the importance of the physical form and visual appearance of Tennyson’s poetry and how this might have influenced the way that his poetry was read.
Simon Martin
Simon is an art historian, curator, writer and lecturer. His specialties include; 20th century British art and design, international modern art, contemporary art, ceramics, and folk art.
Tamsin Dillon
Tamsin is a Curator. Until April 2014 she was Director of Art on the Underground; a contemporary art programme that made a contribution to the reputation of Transport for London by working with leading international and emerging artists. They commissioned contemporary art for the millions of people that use London Underground. Current projects include Curator, 14-18-NOW and Curator, Kings Cross Partnership. Other projects in 2015 included Curator for LIGHTS OUT; a project as part of 1418-Now, the national culture programme to mark 100 years since the first World War.
