Beyond the Burrow

Designer Felicity Shum invites you into her playful world to create your own creature… What animal will you choose?

Felicity Shum is a designer maker at heart; she recently challenged herself to complete nine projects in as many months to explore her practice through materials and processes… One of her ‘Nine Projects’ (The Courtyard Gallery, September 2016) was a handmade family of linen bunnies… Father rabbit is a painter and decorator who spends his days painting other bunnies’ burrows to put cabbage on the table. Mother rabbit loves gardening and growing delicious carrots, helped by their daughter when she’s not playing on her swing. This exhibition explores anthropomorphism and the narratives that designers create for animals.

Felicity invites you in to her playful world to create your own creature… What animal will you choose; will he have big ears, a fluffy tummy, a long tail? Is your creature a greengrocer, does she love ice cream, or maybe she is going on holiday somewhere sunny? We will use a range of fabrics, some hand printed by the designer, to make your creature – it’s great if you’ve done some hand sewing before but it’s not essential, you can bring a grown up to help.

The creature you create in the workshop will become part of the evolving exhibition in the Courtyard Gallery. Creatures may be collected at the end of the closing drinks on 22nd July, or after the exhibition has finished by prior arrangement with the designer.

Workshops are free and materials are provided, however places are limited.
