Exploration Walks

Walking Artist Alison Lloyd leads three walking expeditions to coincide with the exhibition Joseph Banks: A Great Endeavour

Walking Artist Alison Lloyd leads  three walking expeditions to coincide with the exhibition Joseph Banks: A Great Endeavour.  Each walk explores a different environment:  the city, woodlands and  coastline.  Elements of the walks feel and look like conventional ‘rambles’, other parts will be unique, a surprise taking participants on a journey of discovery into the ‘unknown’. All the three walks are about exploration and travelling into the unknown as Joseph Banks would have done when he set sail with James Cook on their voyage of discovery.

Alison will lead each walk, setting the scene for an exploration into the unknown. During the walks she will talk about 'wilderness', the challenge of the unfamiliar, ways of walking and experiencing a place, and being a walking artist. Alison investigates our feelings about the expedition, such as those expressed by Joseph Bank in one of his first journal entries

Extract from Joseph Bank’s Journal.

After having waited in this place ten days, the ship, and everything belonging to me, being all that time in perfect readyness to sail at a moments warning, we at last got a fair wind, and this at
3 O’Clock in the even weigd anchor, and set sail, all in excellent health and spirits perfectly prepared (in Mind at least) to undergo with chearfulness any fatigues or dangers that may occur in our intended voyagage
.

"A walk is a line of enquiry. The poetic experience of place, specifically wild or mountainous places - places where we become independent again, remote from help - presents a situation for walking and art to come together." Alison Lloyd

Further information will be sent out to everyone who books for the walks
