Sound Work Residency– Expression of Interest

The Residency
The Collection and Usher Gallery Lincoln, and Lincoln School of Art & Design are inviting artists working with sound and audio, to submit expressions of interest for a unique opportunity to work with Archeologically holdings at The Collection, Lincoln.
This residency will aim to provide an artist the opportunity to generate and explore innovative ideas by offering research time in The Collection, Lincoln in order to create new work that reinterprets part of the permanent collection into a aural/sound work for The Collections unique sound wall. This residency is supported by Arts Council England, The Collection Lincoln and Lincoln School of Art and Design provide the successful artist with financial support, mentoring and professional development opportunities.


Expression of Interest


We are inviting expression of interest from artists and makers wishing to take up this opportunity. We welcome applicants working in any digital medium and time based artists, musicians, writers or performers. It is intended that the work will be hosted on The Collections unique sound wall. Hidden within the entrance hall to the museum this 22 speaker 16 channel set up allows for a unique interpretation of sound across the 10m long orientation space. 
The residency will include:  


o Artists’ bursary £500.00
o Research time at The Collection, Lincoln
o Mentoring with university tutors, and one session with sound artist
o 1 day in a recording studio at Lincoln university, assistance in mastering the work
o Exhibition of work at the collection
o Artist talk at The Collection
o Travel and materials budget of up to £200.00


Background Information


The Collection, Lincoln
The Collection is Lincolnshire’s museum for art and archaeology, housed in two adjacent buildings in the heart of historic Lincoln. The archaeology collections are displayed in new purpose built museum that opened in 2005.The museum and the adjoining Usher Gallery joined together to form The Collection.
The Usher Gallery is Lincolnshire’s premier art gallery, officially opened in 1927 following a bequest to the City by Lincoln jeweller James Ward Usher. The Usher Gallery combines displays from its
permanent collections of fine arts, decorative arts and horology, enhanced by loans of acclaimed works from national collections, with a vibrant programme of temporary exhibitions.
The Collection has an innovative contemporary art programme supported by Arts Council England.
Lincoln’s archaeology museum and the Usher Gallery are operated by Lincolnshire County Council in partnership with the City of Lincoln Council, the Arts Council England. The Collection welcomes 120,000 visitors a year to its galleries.


Lincoln School of Art & Design
Founded in 1863 Lincoln School of Art & Design is a distinguished part of the University of Lincoln and celebrates its 150th year in 2013. The School is in the College of Arts and forms a significant feature within the cultural quarter of the city and the university.
The undergraduate and postgraduate student experience is informed by research and practice of national and international standing, and focuses on the development of independent, inquisitive and innovative artists and designers. The School has a very good track record of Art and Design student satisfaction and student successes with many achieving industry prizes and national awards every year.


Application Process


If you wish to be considered for this opportunity, due to launch in July, please supply


1. samples of your work presented as one of the below
• up to three mp3 files not exceeding 20 minutes.
• up to five images
• Three video mp4 or quick time video files, or links to three videos on vimeo or you tube. Not exceeding  15 minutes.

2. full written proposal ( max. 1 side of A4)

3. CV detailing your experience
4. An artist statement
5. Two referees.

Please also state if you have workshop or teaching experience.


Timeline


Deadline – Please send your submissions, to reach us by Sunday the 30th of June.
Residency will start from mid July 2013.
Work to be completed by the end of 30th September 2013
Work displayed during the Frequency Festival beginning 18th October 2013.
