Prodigal Daughter Returns

Following a national exhibition tour, John Collier’s painting The Prodigal Daughter returned to Lincoln today.  As part of Family Matters: The Family in British Art the painting was loaned to three museums, Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery, Millennium Galleries, Sheffield and the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.  The painting is a stunning depiction of a flamboyantly attired young woman confronting her parents in the family home.  She strongly contrasts with the dress of her parents and the decoration of the room they are sitting in.

The Prodigal Daughter is not back for long however, as in February the painting is going on a much longer journey – to the Yale Centre for British Art in the USA.  There it will be part of an important exhibition Edwardian Opulence.

It is a great privilege for works from our collections to be included in major national and international exhibitions, but we are always pleased when they return home safe and sound.

Find out more about the painting on our collections database at Lincs to the Past.
