Identify - a new archaeological finds resource

Lincolnshire is a county with a rich archaeological heritage and finds are made on a daily basis by members of the public - metal detectorists, gardeners and even people out walking the dog!  To help you begin to identify any finds you have made, we have launched a new finds reference resource - called Identify - in the form of a series of pull-out drawers each providing a broad typological and chronological overview of a type of object from a certain period.

Although, understandably, the Identify drawers cannot contain an example of every type of object it is possible to find, they aim to help you discover whether that scrap of metal you found is actually the foot from an Anglo Saxon brooch, whether that little bronze disc is really a Roman coin, or if the funny-looking stone you found on the beach is an ancient fossilised creature.

The 12 Identify drawers are arranged into the following categories:

Roman coins

Anglo Saxon and Medieval coins

Post Medieval coins and tokens

Roman brooches

Anglo Saxon brooches

Medieval and later coins and tokens

Prehistoric pottery

Roman pottery

Medieval pottery

Post Medieval pottery

Weights and measures

Fossils

If you require some help identifying your find, the staff in the gallery are there to help, and they can also arrange an appointment with a curator if you have a particularly unusual find that you'd like to discuss in more detail.  We would always recommend that finds are recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme so they can add to our ever-growing knowledge of the county's past.
