Competition winner Madeline Heeney helped The Collection staff to unveil the winning designs, as part of our OPEM3 flag design competition.  Children visiting our OPEM 3 exhibition were invited to have a go at designing their own geometric flag inspired by the colourful paintings of Neville Palmer, one of the artists featured in the exhibition. There were a number of very impressive designs, but eventually our curators were able to select just two designs out of the pile of entries to be printed onto full sized flags and flown from the roof of The Usher Gallery.

The judges were also very impressed by the originality of this design, among others, and found it difficult to choose just two.

Madeline climbed to the roof of The Usher Gallery, along with curator Maggie Warren, to help raise her design up the flagpole. Luckily, the wind held off long enough to hoist the flag without a hitch. The new flags can be seen flying from The Usher Gallery until the end of September.
