The Lincoln 3D Scans project has invited several churches from the historic city of Lincoln, to open its doors to welcome the project proposed by artist Oliver Laric. We have now scanned at St Mary le Wigford, St Peter at Gowts and St Hugh’s Catholic Church.

St Hugh’s is the most recent of the churches we have visited. Maggie and I have visited the church on two occasions to complete numerous scans. St Hugh, the symbolic saint of the church has many statues and icons depicting his importance to the church and Lincoln as a bishop. As you enter the church through the porch, to your left there is a modern statue of St Hugh. Hugh is wearing bishops’ vestments and is holding Lincoln Cathedral in his right hand, with a swan at his feet. This statue/portrait of Hugh carved from wood was included in scans produced. Other scans produced on our visit include several of the images from the ‘Stations of the Cross’. The Stations of the Cross, which date from 1896-97 are made from high quality Carrara marble from Italy. There are fourteen Stations, representing different scenes of Jesus's journey to Calvary. Underneath each Station is a memorial tablet commissioned by the benefactors of the church for their loved ones, these were added some ten to twenty years after the Stations were installed.

After scanning and viewing the church, I feel it best to incorporate a little history behind the church and the significance of the work introduced to our collection of scans.

It has been said that churches are magnificent, beautiful, and intricate buildings and it has taken me by shock to discover that St Hugh’s was built in only one year. The building of the church took place in 1892 and opened 19th December 1893. Albert Vicars designed the church in the late Victorian gothic style and the work was carried out by H.S & W. Close of Lincoln.

St Hugh’s Catholic Church has made itself a vibrant church within our community hosting many events and is celebrated as an active church in the city of Lincoln.

Many thanks to the staff at St Hugh’s Catholic Church for helping with this project and the information supplied by the Visitors Guide available inside the church.
